Does cheese bread exist in the US? Find out where to buy the real thing
Did you know that cheese bread is totally from Minas Gerais? Although the various stories about this food are different and even contradict each other at times, they all agree on one point: it appeared on farms in Minas Gerais in the mid-18th century.
As wheat flour was the main ingredient for most baked goods and in Minas this ingredient was lacking, the people of Minas had to find another solution: manioc flour, which was quite abundant in the region.
In this way, the cooks began to mix flour, milk, eggs and fat (from lard or butter) and, finally, cheese chips, giving rise to the famous cheese bread.
The history of cheese bread in Brazil
In itself, the origin of the cheese bread is quite uncertain, but there are reports that state that Minas Gerais cooks used cassava flour in their bread recipes instead of wheat flour and, together with this starch, the cheeses that were added were added. left over and hardened in the kitchens.
The eggs and milk also went into this mixture, they rolled the whole dough and took it to the oven to bake - in this way, the famous cheese buns were created.
Another story claims that the recipe would have emerged during the period of slavery, from the union of eggs with milk - foods known as Portuguese legacies - and cassava, which until then was considered the bread of the indigenous natives of Brazil. Finally, there was the cheese, responsible for giving flavor to the pasta.
It is important to say, finally, that the popularization of this dough only happened during the 1950s, with the development of greengrocers with cakes, cookies and the famous bread. From that moment on, cheese bread began to be consumed throughout the country.
