The origin of "biscoito de polvilho"
Traditionally from Minas Gerais, "biscoito de polvilho" was developed in a bakery in São Paulo, becoming very popular among "cariocas" (people from Rio de Janeiro).
It is not known for sure who invented this recipe that pleases so many Brazilians and tourists, only that it has been consumed for a long time. According to research by historian Luís Câmara Cascudo, author of the book "História da Alimentação no Brasil" (History of Food in Brazil), some farms in Minas Gerais were already preparing "biscoitos de polvilho" since the 18th century.
However, in São Paulo, according to data collected by researcher Rosa Belluzzo, author of the book "São Paulo — Memória e Sabor (Unesp)" (São Paulo — Memory and Flavor), the cookies were served at the table with "bolinhos de chuva" (rain cakes), "sequilhos" (cornstarch cookies), and other appetizers.
